A healing courtyard for a rehabilitation facility in Wilmington, Massachusetts.
Set within suburban Wilmington, Massachusetts, this rehabilitation courtyard emerged from a need to create a restorative outdoor environment for facility users and staff. The design responds to the Northeast's temperate climate and seasonal rhythms, drawing on Rewild's commitment to ecological intelligence and naturalistic planting to foster healing through connection with living systems. Rather than ornamental plantings divorced from ecological function, the courtyard integrates layered plant communities that support local biodiversity while creating visual and sensory richness throughout the year. The approach acknowledges that therapeutic landscapes benefit from authentic ecological design—spaces where seasonal change, wildlife activity, and authentic plant communities reinforce human wellbeing. By establishing native plant layers that echo regional ecosystems, Rewild transformed the courtyard into a place of genuine stewardship, where visitors experience the restorative power of nature while supporting the ecological networks that sustain it.
