Verdant, Informal and Romantic, the terrace’s planting design is inspired by the English Cottage Garden. The rich plant palette creates a timeless landscape that gently evolves through the seasons. Diverse textures and shades of green paint a serene backdrop for a relaxing haven.

Vertical layering of plants brings depth to the landscape.

  • The lowest layer or ground cover is composed of a mix of white sage (Artemisia ludoviciana), threadleaf amsonia (Amsonia hubrichtii), bearberry (Cotoneaster damneri),  English Ivy (Hedera helix), sparkled with very subtle pops of white and pastel colors of perennials flowers such as Gauras (Gaura lindheimeri ‘Sparkle white’) and New England asters (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae).
  • The intermediate layer or shrub layer is a mix of boxwoods (Buxus sempervirens) and hollies (Ilex aquifolium) interplanted with indigenous ornamental grasses. The airyness of grasses creates a gentle flowy motion through the planting.
  • Maples (Acer rubrum), Hollywood juniper (Hollywood Juniper), wedding cake trees (Cornus controversa), chaste trees (Vitex agnus-castus) shape up the canopy layer. These tree species have been chosen for their sculptural quality. Their interesting branching patterns frame New York City’s breathtaking skyline in the back.

This diverse plant palette will provide food and habitats for birds and pollinators and integrate this landscape into a green corridor that connects other gardens and larger parks such as Central Park, less than a block away.

This urban Rewilding is highly beneficial to the local ecosystem and global biodiversity in cities.
